Summer is here, and that means it is time for me to switch to my easy summer hair routine! I ditch the blow dryer and curling iron for my natural texture to save me time – more time for the pool! Here’s how I do it!
Is this year flying by or is it just me?? I feel like we JUST had Easter, and now summer is rapidly approaching, getting hotter and hotter by the minute. While I have had a great time getting more and more experienced with curling my hair, I just don’t have the time or the desire to curl my hair all throughout summer. Between the heat and sweaty hair that comes with it and the humidity and the fact that I just want more time to play, I’m officially instating my easy summer hair routine. Yay!
Easy Summer Hair Routine
The beauty of this easy summer hair routine is that it requires absolutely NO styling tools – no hair dryer, no curling iron or straightener, nada! AND it only requires minimal product.
I have naturally wavy hair, which to be honest I only really learned to embrace as an adult. I spent hours in high school blowdrying my hair straight – this was before the flat iron was invented folks – and I did everything in my power to straighten my hair within an inch of it’s life. I’m sad about this, because my hair does have great texture and I wish I had embraced it a long time ago!
To style my hair this way, I use a few different products:
1. Wide Tooth Comb (I use this one and love it because it hangs in my shower)
2. Absorbent Hair Towel (I use this Turbie Twist Towel)
3. Weightless Dry Oil Spray
4. Loreal TXT IT Deconstructing Gum
In the shower, I shampoo and condition my hair like usual. I always leave my conditioner in the entire time I’m in the shower – while I wash my face, shave my legs, bathe, etc. I use the wide tooth comb to comb out any tangles before I rinse it out and then usually again afterwards. (Our water pressure is insane and usually tangles my hair up when I rinse!).
Once I’m out of the shower, I will flip my head over and use my regular towel to scrunch my hair a bit to get the initial squeeze of water out. It is important to NOT schuzch your hair (schuzch is a fancy words I use for scrub, as in, rub the towel vigorously all over your head to dry it off). That will break up the cuticle of your hair and make it look frizzy. I always just put the towel on the ends of my hair, scrunch it up to my scalp, and gently squeeze.
I do this a few times all over my head until I get most of the moisture squeezed out. Then I gently run my fingers through it to make sure there aren’t any tangles. Once I do that, I use the Turbie Twist Towel towel and loosely twist my hair up and leave it until I finish getting ready. This gets the additional excess moisture without me having to touch it a bunch, because we all know that the more you touch curly hair, the frizzier it gets.
Once I’ve brushed my teeth and all that jazz, I’ll take out the towel and spray my oil spray all throughout my hair, and then flip my head over and spray underneath. I have a LOT of hair so I have to make sure I get it all. Then I gently, GENTLY, scrunch it a bit to work the oil in.
Once that is all worked in, I bust out this amazing goo. This was SUCH a happy accident for me! I was out of my regular hair gel (I honestly don’t even remember what I used to use because this stuff is SO good) and found a jar of this in the back of my bathroom cabinet. I was in a pinch and though it is designed to use on dry hair, I decided to give it a whirl anyways and was BLOWN AWAY. It gives my hair the perfect amount of hold with absolutely NO crunchiness. It just holds its natural texture perfectly. So I’ve been using it ever since!
I put a glob (there are no real measurements here, just dip my finger and use whatever I get out) in the palm of my hand and then rub my hands together to warm it up and spread it out a bit. I flip my head over and scrunch my hair with the product in my hands. Once I have the underneath done, I flip my head back over and work through one side of my hair with it, rubbing my hands together as needed to redistribute it, and then move to the other side.
The scrunch technique (I’m not even sure I’m allowed to call it that but here we are) is more of a “lift and squeeze” technique. I take a section of hair in my hand, gently lift it all the way to my scalp, and then squeeze it all at once. There is no science or art behind this, I just feel like it works best for my hair texture.
Once I have done that, it is seriously a HANDS OFF situation. I have found that the more I fiddle with it, the worse it looks, so I just stop touching it. I’m going for a natural look and nothing natural is perfect so a few weird spots here and there don’t bother me too much. As it dries, it lays down a bit and looks better and better as the day goes on!
And friends, that is it! I get dressed and head to the computer to get my work done! I really love this style for the summer because it is so fuss-free and I don’t have to worry about “getting ready” the next day if I want to head to the pool on a random Tuesday afternoon and swim.
Here’s what it ends up looking like all the way around – don’t you just love a good 360? I’d love to know if YOU have an easy summer hair routine that you use for your hair!
