today’s sponsor shopping post features the super talented melissa from sochick! handbags. i can almost guarantee you will love. her. stuff. it is so beautiful! and – she has a really great piece of advice for handmade artists! read on…
when did you open your shop?
I officially opened my shop, SoChick! Handbags, on September 1, 2010… though I had been sewing for friends a year before then!
how did you learn to do what you do?
I am self-taught in sewing and Handbag design. I learned to thread my Grandmother’s sewing machine via many phone calls to my Stepmother and Mother-in-law; I learned most of what I know about handbag construction and design from what I have read on blogs like U-handbag.com and the internet.
where do you find your inspiration?
I am inspired by Lisa Lam and Amy Butler. I love their cool modern, yet timeless, takes on design as well as use of hardware and beautiful fabrics. I am also inspired every day by the things around me and places I visit… especially iconic southern cities such as Savannah, GA: Timeless grace and charm with modern day class.
what is your favorite handmade shop?
I have a few that I regularly scope out, including Skye’s lovely shop, for sure! My most recent purchase was from Bubblewrapp’d, she made a lovely custom order for me (which I gifted to my MIL for Christmas).
what is your favorite product in your shop?
Um… all of ‘em! *wink* Honestly, I’d say it’s a tie between the SoChick Sling, the NEW Julie wristlet and the Pleated Dahlia tote.
give us one tip for aspiring handmade artists!
Research, research, research. You need to know what you’re getting into and have a plan of action, you can’t see growth if you don’t have a clear vision of where you are going or where you want to be.
